During the Nawabi rule of Lucknow, the highfalutin ladies of that era employed chikankari workers for their personal attendance and adorned themselves in the best attires hand crafted by the nimble fingers of these artisans. To create newer designs different stitches were to be used. One such stitch was introduced as Ghas patti, which is in the form of grass blades stacked in a row. An improvisation was done in this stitch by parting it from the centre, like it is in done in a hairstyle, thus it is called maangdaar Ghas patti.

Chikan embroidery the stitch ‘keel’ has derived its name from this beautiful piece of nose pin. To make this stitch, a very tiny stitch is picked up on the fabric with the needle and the Phanda stitch is embroidered. Around this pearl like dot very tiny spikes are embroidered which have a ‘v’ shape on the top of the spikes and it resembles like the gold nose pin.

Keel Kangan Work- A piece of Jewellery or a decorative band, which is circular in shape and little thicker than a bangle worn on the wrist. In its myriad designs and manifestations continues to capture the heart of women. This is worn for luck and prosperity. This is a decorative band made of gold, silver and studded with precious stones and is of various styles. The Kangan stitch used in Chikan has a keel embroidered in the centre with little spikes or Kanta with a ‘v’ shape on top of Kanta embroidered all around it that looks like a Kangan. If two rows Kantaare embroidered alternatively around the keel then it is known as Bara Kangan.

Shadow work is one of the most popular stitches, in this stitch the filling is done on the wrong side while the design is bounded by a running stitch on the right side of the fabric to give it a neat look, since the stitch is made on the reverse side of the fabric, resembling the herringbone stitch.

Phanda refers to knots that are in the shape of Millets. Phanda is considered to be a more intricate version of stitches. However, the knots are much smaller and far more delicate. Mostly utilised in making the centre of the flowers in simple Chikankari design motifs. It is a knot type of a millet shaped stitch.
