‘Chikankari’ or ‘Chikan work’ is a famous traditional embroidery technique that belongs to the ‘Land of Nawabs’, Lucknow Uttar Pradesh. This is a Persian craft that was introduced in India by the Mughals around the 17th Century. The word ‘Chikan’ has been taken from the Persian word ‘Chikeen’ which means Creating Delicate Patterns on a Fabric. ‘Noor Jahan’, the wife of the famous Mughal emperor Jahangir was a talented embroideress and had a special inclination towards Chikankari. It is a hand-embroidered process wherein the wooden blocks are hand chiseled in various designer patterns, and the natural stew is prepared for printing, which then is printed on the fabric.
